When I sit down every night, I think about how to develop an athlete’s character. It seems to be a bigger part of my job then making them a better athlete. What I have found out over the years is that if u cannot intrinsically motivate them to become better it does not matter what else you do with them. The ways to do that is show them that you care and you want what is best for them. I do that by being there friend but keeping their distance. You have to go beyond the norm to help them grow as a person and athlete. Being passionate when I coach, which means getting upset when they do not do the little things I ask to reinforce their character. Have fun with them occasionally and not always so serious so they are able to let loose around you and learn to be good at what they do. Educate them on what they do and why they do it so, they can grow even more. At the end of the day, if that does not work then that player will 9 out 10 times never become better and does not belong in your system.
